F-1 student visa processing time — full timeline

I-20, SEVIS, DS-160, and the consular interview queue.

For international students admitted to a SEVP-certified US school who need to obtain an F-1 visa stamp before traveling.

F-1 has no USCIS petition stage — the school issues an I-20, the student pays the SEVIS fee, files DS-160, and the timeline is dominated by the consular interview wait at their home post.

STAGE 01· Editorial estimate

School issues I-20 + SEVIS fee

After admission, the SEVP-certified US school issues Form I-20 in the student's name. The student pays the I-901 SEVIS fee (US$350) and registers in the SEVIS system before applying for the visa.

DS-160 + appointment scheduling

Online nonimmigrant visa application plus the US$185 MRV fee and earliest available appointment slot at the chosen consulate. The DS-160 itself takes hours, but the embassy backlog drives this.

F-1 consular interview

In-person visa interview at the US embassy or consulate. Officers focus on academic preparation, ability to fund the program, and the requirement that the student intends to return home after studies (INA 214(b)).

Current bottlenecks

The interview wait is everything. India, Brazil, and Colombia run the longest F-1 queues globally — sometimes months. F-1 applicants benefit from interview-waiver eligibility if renewing within 12 months of expiration. 214(b) refusals are the most common adverse outcome and require addressing the underlying nonimmigrant-intent issue before reapplying.

FAQ

How long does an F-1 visa take?[+]

After receiving your I-20 and paying the SEVIS fee, the timeline depends entirely on your consulate. Some posts schedule interviews in 1 to 2 weeks; others run 3 to 6 months out for first-time applicants.

When can I enter the US on my F-1?[+]

No earlier than 30 days before the program start date listed on your I-20. Earlier arrival requires a different visa class.

Can I work on an F-1 visa?[+]

On-campus work up to 20 hours per week during school is allowed without authorization. CPT (curricular practical training) and post-graduation OPT (optional practical training) require separate I-20 endorsements and, for OPT, an I-765 EAD application.

What is 214(b) and what should I do if refused?[+]

INA 214(b) presumes nonimmigrants intend to immigrate; the applicant must overcome it. Most F-1 refusals trace to thin home-country ties or unclear program funding. Reapply only after addressing the underlying issue — repeat refusals are common.

Can I apply for an interview waiver?[+]

F-1 renewals within 12 months of expiration are usually eligible for interview waivers (subject to consulate discretion and policy windows). First-time F-1 applicants generally cannot waive.

How does F-1 differ from M-1 or J-1?[+]

F-1 covers academic programs, M-1 covers vocational, and J-1 covers exchange-visitor programs. J-1 sometimes carries a 2-year home-residence requirement that affects later visa changes.
